In 1993, CPAWS, working with other groups, helped found the Yellowstone to Yukon (Y2Y) Conservation Initiative — an international network of groups and individuals working together to maintain and restore the unique natural heritage of the Yellowstone to Yukon region and the quality of life it affords to residents and visitors.
The Y2Y initiaive is a joint Canada-US not-for-profit organization that seeks to preserve and maintain the wildlife, native plants, wilderness and natural processes of the mountainous region from Yellowstone National Park to the Yukon Territory.
Y2Y takes a scientific approach to conservation and is recognized as one of the planet's leading mountain conservation initiatives. Y2Y was officially established in 1997 and has two offices located in Canmore, Alberta and Bozeman, Montana.
The Y2Y region stretches 3200 km along the Rocky Mountain chain from Wyoming, USA to the Peel River in Canada's Yukon Territory. It forms an interconnected web of life where wildlife such as grizzly bears and wolves still roam freely.
Development pressures continue to grow throughout the Rocky Mountains, with mining and oil and gas development, more people moving to the mountains and all of the infrastructure and roads that these activities entail.
