2010 Parks Report
Canada's Parks Day is coming up this Saturday, July 17! To celebrate, we released our 3rd annual Parks Day Report. Because 2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity, we asked the question:
How is wildlife faring in Canada's Parks?
Good News:
- Canada's first deep sea National Marine Conservation Area established in Gwaii Haanas ,BC;
- Progress on several new parks, including Sable Island, Nova Scotia and the Mealy Mountains of Labrador;
- Efforts underway to reintroduce species, like Black-footed ferrets in Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan and the Plains Bison in Banff National Park, AB
Needs Improvement:
- New parks still urgently needed to protect endangered species in BC's South Okanagan and Southern Strait of Georgia;
- Better boundaries needed for some proposed parks to protect species like little brown bats in Manitoba's Fisher Bay, woodland caribou in Nááts'ihch'oh, NWT, and unique freshwater seals of Tursujuq, Quebec;
- Stronger management needed to protect species like American marten in New Brunswick's Mount Carleton Provincial Park and grizzlies in Alberta's Rocky Mountain parks.
